PawsFest 2011
Sunday, October 2nd from 12:30 to 5pm (Rain or Shine)
at Grace Episcopal Church
9 Harrington Avenue (Corner of Kinderkamack & Harrington Avenue)
Westwood, New Jersey 07675
This year the Blessing of the Animals at Grace Episcopal Church will be accompanied with some very special pet and people friendly activities collectively called PawsFest!
Pawsfest 2011 offers something for everyone: fun activities, free samples, prizes, and booths with information, gifts and food for pets and people. PawsFest 2011 will include plenty of wonderful, Italian-American food prepared by Westwood’s Your Way Café. There will also be lots of delicious desserts homemade by our donors and gourmet dog dinners prepared by Your Way Café, as well as dog treats galore courtesy of Westwood Pets. The Canine Good Citizen test will be one of the many activities starting at 12:30 (please contact Dog Trainer, Amanda Berk for your appointment at 201 674 8337 or email her at atreat4dogs@yahoo.com ). Bring home your own special keepsake, too: there will be a pet and people sketcher (feel free to bring a photo of your pet with you from which the artist can work) and professional pet photography (you can even dress your pet in a costume if you like and pose for a photo!). There will be plenty of gifts to purchase to benefit our favorite animal friends. There will be booths featuring safe and healthy personal products for animals and people, jewelry, essential oils, hand knitted hats and scarves, and a used books sale set up for all to visit. At 2:30pm, the Blessing of the Animals Mass will be presented by Reverend Robert R. Rhodes. Animals of all species and religious affiliations are welcome to come for the blessing. Live music will follow the mass. The event will also feature adorable adoptable pets including dogs from Last Resort Dog Rescue and kittens and cats from FOCAS (Friends of the County Animal Shelter) and rabbits from Hug-a-Bunny Rabbit Rescue, Inc. This will be the first adoption event for FOCAS’s amazing survivor and special needs cat, Willow! Please visit the websites www.thelastresort.com and www.focasnews.org and www.petfinder.com/shelters/hugabunny.html for a complete list of adoptable animals. And returning to Grace Episcopal Church and back by popular demand, there will be a visit from celebrity retired research beagles: Harriet, Juno and Putty. These Freegles will be there to embrace the crowds in celebration of their second year outside the research labs and in the loving arms of their forever homes. Retired blood donor dog, Blackie, our peace4paws mascot, will preside over festivities. Dogs on six foot non-retractable leashes are welcome. The suggested donation is $5 for adults, while children attend for free. Proceeds go to support sanctuary for the animals of research and related fields. This is Willow in her custom made cart. FOCAS, Friends of the County Animal Shelter, Inc are rehabilitating and caring for Willow until she finds her forever home. Willow is feeling the love right now, but, only months ago Willow was found near-death, with paralyzed hind legs due to a bullet that had splintered her spine. She received extensive hospitalization, neurological consultation, acupuncture, physical therapy and this cart with wheels which she continues to learn how to use. Surgery to remove the bullet is not an option due to the damage sustained. Miraculously, she is beginning to show voluntary movement of and able to stand for a short time on her hind legs! Willow will be attending the Blessing of the Animals with her foster family. We are hoping that at Pawsfest she may find her special "forever home".
